Rose Streatfield looks back on trips to the boxing with her father

I used to come here – to the boxing, with my father. All I can remember is it was very very smoky, I think I was about 10 or 11 at the time, and it was just very noisy, very smoky. Don’t know quite why dad brought me, I have got a younger brother but I think because I was the middle child I was always chosen to come along – maybe I showed an interest.

I quite liked boxing I suppose that’s why he used to bring me. Of course, it was a chance to get out, wasn’t it? Entertainment was quite scarce, unless you played on the bomb site or in the playgrounds, if you were lucky.
